The Detroit Red Wings recalled forward Sheldon Dries from the Grand Rapids Griffins under emergency conditions on Tuesday, Oct. 6, pulling the Macomb native up after a fast start to the AHL season.

The move came the same day Detroit placed forwards Marco Kasper and Mason Appleton on injured reserve and activated Dylan Larkin. Dries took warmups for Tuesday’s 5-3 win over Ottawa at Little Caesars Arena but was not in the lineup, according to Detroit Hockey Now.

Dries, 32, has three goals and an assist in two games for Grand Rapids this season. He scored twice in the Griffins’ 5-2 season-opening win at Cleveland on Oct. 2, then tied the rematch with eight seconds left in regulation on Oct. 4 before the Monsters won 5-4 in overtime.

Last season he had 23 goals and 45 points in 57 games with the Griffins, with a plus-20 rating. Over 10 AHL seasons he has 293 points (164 goals, 129 assists) in 398 games. He has also played 127 NHL games over six seasons with Colorado, Vancouver, and Detroit, scoring 16 goals and 26 points. The Griffins said he made his Red Wings debut last season on March 12 at Tampa Bay.

The Griffins (1-0-1-0) open their home schedule Friday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. against the Manitoba Moose at Van Andel Arena. The Red Wings host Seattle the same night.
