Western Michigan opened its final season at Lawson Ice Arena with a 6-0 win over Ferris State on Thursday night in Kalamazoo. Garrett Szydlowski scored twice, Joona Väisänen had a goal and two assists, and Quentin Miller stopped all 26 shots he faced for the shutout.
Szydlowski opened the scoring at 12:05 of the first period, set up by Tyler MacKenzie, and the Broncos took a 1-0 lead into the intermission despite outshooting the Bulldogs 15-7.
The second period broke it open. Szydlowski scored his second at 7:18 from Cole Crusberg-Roseen and Zack Sharp, and William Whitelaw followed 31 seconds later, with Bobby Cowan and Crusberg-Roseen assisting. Väisänen added a power-play goal at 18:40, from Tommy Lafrenière and Ty Henricks, to make it 4-0 after two.
Freshman Nicholas Sykora scored his first collegiate goal at 3:04 of the third, assisted by Michael Neumeier and Väisänen. Lafrenière closed the scoring with a power-play goal at 18:16, with Väisänen and Whitelaw drawing assists.
Goalies: Miller made 26 saves for Western Michigan. Martin Lundberg made 33 saves on 39 shots for Ferris State, playing all but the final 16 seconds before the Bulldogs pulled him for an extra attacker.
Special teams and stats: The Broncos went 2-for-6 on the power play and killed all eight Ferris State chances. Western Michigan outshot Ferris State 39-26 and won 31 of 56 faceoffs. The teams combined for 14 penalties.
What’s next: The home-and-home series shifts to Big Rapids on Friday, when Ferris State hosts Western Michigan in its home opener at 7 p.m. at Ewigleben Ice Arena.
