The Detroit Red Wings placed forward Chase Stillman on waivers Thursday, a move first reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. If the 23-year-old goes unclaimed, he is expected to report to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.
Stillman opened the season on the injured non-roster list with an undisclosed injury. Putting him on waivers indicates he is healthy enough to play, and it is the step Detroit needs to take before assigning him to the minors.
The Red Wings signed Stillman to a one-year, two-way contract on July 4, worth $850,000 at the NHL level and $95,000 in the AHL. He became an unrestricted free agent this summer after the Vancouver Canucks did not give him a qualifying offer.
The New Jersey Devils drafted Stillman 29th overall in 2021. New Jersey traded him to Pittsburgh in March 2025 in the deal that sent Cody Glass to the Devils, and the Penguins moved him to Vancouver that July for goaltender Arturs Silovs. He has yet to play an NHL game.
His AHL career covers 143 regular-season games with Utica, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and Abbotsford, with 21 goals and 45 points. His best season came in 2023-24 with Utica, when he scored 14 goals and 24 points in 54 games. An injury in late October kept him out for nearly four months last season, and he finished with nine points in 24 games.
The move comes as Detroit deals with injuries up front. Coach Todd McLellan said Thursday that center JT Compher remains day-to-day and is not expected to play in this weekend’s games against Seattle on Friday and at Montreal on Saturday.
Grand Rapids opens its home schedule Friday night against the Manitoba Moose at Van Andel Arena.
