Detroit Red Wings assistant general manager Kris Draper will oversee the team’s pro scouting, with Jesse Wallin running amateur scouting, until the club’s front office is finalized, The Athletic’s Max Bultman reported, citing league sources. The report is unconfirmed: the Red Wings have not announced any change to their scouting staff.

If the arrangement holds, it would shift Draper away from the amateur side, which he has run since 2019. The four-time Stanley Cup winner with Detroit has also held the assistant GM title since the 2023-24 season. The Red Wings have not had a formal director of pro scouting since Hall of Famer Mark Howe retired in 2021.

Under the reported setup, Wallin would lead the draft side for now. The report frames the split as a temporary arrangement while the organization settles the shape of its hockey operations department after an offseason of front-office change.

The reported reshuffle lines up with another scouting move that is also unconfirmed. Mitten Hockey reported on Oct. 7 that Red Wings and Stars insider Sean Shapiro had reported veteran scout Mark Leach is rejoining Detroit’s scouting staff. Octopus Thrower suggested Leach could work with Wallin on the amateur side, though his role has not been defined.
