No. 12 Michigan Tech rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat St. Cloud State 3-2 in overtime on Friday, Oct. 9, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Teydon Trembecky scored twice, including the winner 2:09 into 3-on-3 overtime, as the Huskies improved to 3-0-0. It was Tech’s first win over St. Cloud State since March 2, 2013. St. Cloud State fell to 0-2-0 in its home opener.
How it happened
Gavyn Thoreson put St. Cloud ahead at 15:51 of the first period on a rebound, and Hayden Paupanekis made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 4:25 of the second. Trembecky got Michigan Tech on the board later in the second, backhanding a rebound for his second goal of the season, with assists from Max Koskipirtti and Kalem Parker.
Reid Andresen tied it at 12:29 of the third, from Giovanni Morneau and Michael Cicek, his fifth career goal. In overtime, Parker fed Trembecky, with Conner Roulette also assisting. The play was first whistled dead, but video review ruled it a goal, and St. Cloud State’s goaltender-interference challenge failed. It was Trembecky’s sixth career game-winner and second in overtime.
Goalies and numbers
Owen Bartoszkiewicz made 32 saves, 13 in the first period, for his 37th career win. Yan Shostak stopped 26 of 29 for St. Cloud State, which outshot Tech 34-29. The Huskies went 0-for-5 on the power play and killed three of four penalties, and coach Bill Muckalt said the team’s special teams and discipline “need to be a lot better.”
What’s next
The teams finished the nonconference series Saturday night in St. Cloud. Michigan Tech opens its home Hall of Fame Weekend against Alaska on Oct. 16-17 at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
