The Red Wings play their first road game of the season Saturday, Oct. 10, against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre, with puck drop at 7 p.m. It is the second night of a back-to-back for Detroit, which lost 6-3 to Seattle at Little Caesars Arena on Friday. The game is on DSN locally and on 97.1 FM.

Detroit is 1-3-0 after a four-game homestand to open the season, with its only win a 5-3 decision over Ottawa on Tuesday. Montreal is 1-2-1, so the Atlantic Division meeting pairs two teams looking for traction early.

Goalies and lineup

Daniil Tarasov gets his first start of the season after stopping eight of nine shots in relief of John Gibson on Friday, with Gibson backing up. Montreal is expected to start Jacob Fowler, who was called up after Sam Montembeault was hurt in practice. Defenseman Kaiden Guhle makes his season debut for the Canadiens after offseason surgery.

Detroit remains without forwards Marco Kasper and Mason Appleton, both week-to-week with upper-body injuries, and J.T. Compher, who has been ruled out for the weekend with an undisclosed injury. Detroit Hockey Now listed Axel Sandin-Pellikka, Jacob Bernard-Docker, and Andreas Englund as the extra defensemen in its projected lineup. Montreal is without Montembeault, Ivan Demidov, and Oliver Kapanen.

Storylines

Viktor Arvidsson has scored a power-play goal in three straight games and leads the Red Wings in goals. Alex DeBrincat reached 600 career points Friday with an assist in his 700th NHL game and has a point in every game since the opener. Rookies William Wallinder and Michael Brandsegg-Nygård both scored their first NHL goals against the Kraken, the first time two Red Wings scored their first goals in the same game since 1999.

The bigger concern is defense. Seattle scored four goals in a span of 9:26 in the second period Friday, and coach Todd McLellan called it a loss shared by the whole group. Detroit outshot the Kraken 41-24 but could not hold a 2-1 lead.
