The Montreal Canadiens beat the Detroit Red Wings 1-0 in a shootout Saturday night, Oct. 10, at Bell Centre, with Zachary Bolduc scoring the only goal of the tiebreaker in the sixth round. Detroit took a point on the second night of a back-to-back and in its first road game of the season, moving to 1-3-1. Montreal (2-2-1) ended a three-game losing streak.
Goalies take over
Daniil Tarasov, making his first start for Detroit a night after relieving John Gibson in a 6-3 loss to Seattle, stopped all 30 shots he faced through 65 minutes. Jacob Fowler matched him with 30 saves for his second career shutout. Fowler, 21, was making his second straight start since being recalled from the AHL’s Laval Rocket on Wednesday.
Detroit’s best look in regulation came at 3:35 of the third period, when Fowler kicked out his left pad to deny Andrew Copp on a breakaway-style chance. In the shootout, Bolduc beat Tarasov five-hole, and Fowler stopped Nate Danielson to end it as the sixth straight Red Wings shooter to come up empty.
Three Montreal goals waved off
Montreal had the puck behind Tarasov three times without a goal counting. Cole Caufield’s shot 1:16 into the game was ruled on video review not to have fully crossed the goal line. Bolduc’s goal at 7:03 of the second period was disallowed for goaltender interference by Jake Evans, and Alexandre Texier’s apparent winner at 2:37 of overtime was called back because Bolduc was offside.
Detroit’s penalty kill went 4-for-4. Montreal has one power-play goal in 17 chances this season. The Red Wings remain without Marco Kasper, J.T. Compher, and Mason Appleton, and Canadiens fans repeatedly chanted for Dylan Larkin, who requested a trade out of Detroit this offseason.
What’s next
The Red Wings return home to host the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Little Caesars Arena.
