The Seattle Kraken beat the Red Wings 6-3 on Friday, Oct. 9, at Little Caesars Arena, scoring four goals in the second period to erase a Detroit lead. The loss dropped the Red Wings to 1-3-0 at the end of their season-opening, four-game homestand. Seattle improved to 3-2-0 and earned its first regulation win in Detroit.
How it happened
Viktor Arvidsson opened the scoring on the power play at 9:19 of the first period, from Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider, his power-play goal in a third straight game. Berkly Catton tied it at 14:52 with a backhand. Detroit dominated the first period, outshooting Seattle 18-5.
Rookie defenseman William Wallinder put Detroit back in front early in the second with a point shot through traffic, his first NHL goal. Alex DeBrincat earned the primary assist for his 600th career point, in his 700th NHL game. The lead did not last. Seattle scored three goals on four shots in a span of 3:03 and four in 9:26 overall, with Freddy Gaudreau scoring twice and Ben Meyers and Mackie Samoskevich adding goals. John Gibson was replaced by Daniil Tarasov with 5:55 left in the second and Seattle ahead 5-2.
Vince Dunn made it 6-2 on a 5-on-3 power play at 11:53 of the third. Michael Brandsegg-Nygård answered at 15:27, finishing a scramble in front for his first NHL goal. Wallinder and Brandsegg-Nygård were the first pair of Red Wings to score their first NHL goals in the same game since Nov. 17, 1999, and Wallinder became the sixth Detroit defenseman with a point in each of his first two NHL games.
Goalies and numbers
Philipp Grubauer made 37 saves for Seattle. Gibson allowed five goals before his exit, and Tarasov stopped eight of nine shots in relief. Detroit outshot the Kraken 41-24 and led 30-17 in shots after two periods. DeBrincat, who played his 460th straight game, is the ninth Michigan-born player to reach 600 NHL points.
Coach Todd McLellan called it “a 30-man loss” and said his team went from being in control to out of control during the second period.
What’s next
The Red Wings opened their road schedule Saturday in Montreal, the second half of a back-to-back, with Tarasov getting the start.
