The Grand Rapids Griffins close a three-games-in-three-nights weekend on Sunday, Oct. 11, when they host the Chicago Wolves at 4 p.m. at Van Andel Arena. The game streams on AHLTV via FloHockey.
Where things stand
Grand Rapids (2-1-1-0) split the first two games of the weekend. Michal Postava made 36 saves in a 2-1 home-opening win over Manitoba on Friday, with Cameron Butler and William Lagesson scoring. On Saturday in Milwaukee, the Griffins fell 4-1 to the Admirals, with Red Wings first-round pick Carter Bear scoring his first professional goal in his second pro game and Trey Augustine making 22 saves. The penalty kill has been the early strength, killing 14 of 15 chances this season, while the power play went 0-for-5 over the two games.
Coach Dan Watson has said Postava and Augustine will split the net roughly evenly, though the team had not named Sunday’s starter as of Sunday morning. Bear and Chase Stillman, both assigned to Grand Rapids by Detroit on Friday, have played in both games so far this weekend.
Chicago (0-3-0-0) has dropped all three of its games, all to Manitoba, including an 8-3 loss on Oct. 3 and a 6-1 defeat in Saturday’s home opener at Allstate Arena. Chase Wheatcroft scored the Wolves’ lone goal Saturday, and Cayden Primeau made 27 saves.
What to watch
Both teams are on the second half of a back-to-back, and the Griffins are playing their third game in as many days. Bear will be one to watch after his first goal, and Grand Rapids will look for its power play to break through against a Chicago team that has given up 14 goals in its two losses to Manitoba on Oct. 3 and Oct. 10 alone.
