No. 3 Michigan State beat Northern Michigan 5-1 on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 11, at Munn Ice Arena, scoring three times in the second period to take control. The Spartans are 2-0-0 after the weekend, and the Wildcats are 1-3-0. A crowd of 6,555 attended.
Scoring
Jimmy Clark opened the scoring at 9:33 of the first period, finishing a three-on-two rush from Brady Peddle and Gavin O’Connell for his first goal in a Michigan State sweater. Northern Michigan tied it 1:45 into the second when Michael Burchill converted a feed from Mathew Ward, with Grayden Daul also assisting. It was Burchill’s first goal of the season.
The Spartans answered with three goals in less than seven minutes. Ethan Belchetz scored on the power play at 9:49, Ryker Lee followed at 13:13 from Clark and Jack Hextall, and Anthony Romani scored shorthanded at 16:30, set up by Cullen Potter. Hextall closed the scoring with a power-play one-timer at 12:02 of the third, assisted by Thomas Bleyl and Eric Nilson.
Hextall finished with a goal and two assists, and Clark had a goal and an assist. Michigan State outshot Northern Michigan 33-30.
Goalies and special teams
Quentin Sigurdson made 29 saves for Michigan State, allowing only Burchill’s goal. Oliver Auyeung-Ashton stopped 28 of 33 shots for Northern Michigan. The Spartans went 2-for-3 on the power play and added the shorthanded goal, while the Wildcats were 0-for-3 with the man advantage. Each team took three minor penalties.
