St. Cloud State beat No. 12 Michigan Tech 5-3 on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center, handing the Huskies their first loss of the season and splitting the nonconference series. Joseph Belisle broke a 3-3 tie with 11:54 left. Michigan Tech is 3-1-0, and St. Cloud State is 1-2-0.
Scoring
Elias Jansson gave Tech the lead with a shorthanded goal 2:05 into the game, his second of the season and 22nd of his career, with Tom Leppa assisting. Brock Souch tied it on the power play 28 seconds later. Thor Byfuglien put St. Cloud ahead at 8:34 of the second, and Isaac Gordon answered at 15:29 with his first goal of the season, set up by Matthew Van Blaricom and Luke Shipley.
The third period started with two goals in 31 seconds. William Ahlrik broke in alone 44 seconds in, and Michael Cicek tied it at 1:15 with his first goal of the season, from Shipley and Lucas Brenton. Belisle scored the winner at 8:06, assisted by Nolan Roed and Gavyn Thoreson, and Thoreson added an empty-net goal with 1:12 left to finish with three points.
In goal and on special teams
Owen Bartoszkiewicz made 30 saves for Tech, and Patriks Berzins stopped 30 of 33 for St. Cloud State, which outshot the Huskies 35-33. Tech went 0-for-2 on the power play and killed two of three penalties. St. Cloud State won 36 of 67 faceoffs.
What’s next
Michigan Tech hosts Alaska on Friday, Oct. 16, at 7:07 p.m., in its final nonconference series. It is Hall of Fame weekend in Houghton: Colin Murphy, Darcy Way, and Wayne Weller will be inducted Friday and honored at Saturday’s game.
