Grand Rapids Griffins goaltender Michal Postava was named the Howies Hockey Tape/AHL Player of the Week on Monday, Oct. 12, for the week ending Oct. 11. The 24-year-old Red Wings goalie went 2-0-0 in two home starts, stopping 58 of 60 shots for a 1.00 goals-against average and a .967 save percentage.
Postava opened the week with 36 saves in a 2-1 win over the Manitoba Moose in the Griffins’ home opener on Friday, Oct. 9, holding down a Manitoba team that had scored 11 goals in its first two games. He closed it Sunday with 22 saves in a 5-1 win over the Chicago Wolves, a night that also brought his first AHL regular-season assist. Jesse Kiiskinen’s hat trick carried the offense in that one.
Through three starts this season, Postava is 3-0-0 with a 1.34 GAA and a .950 save percentage. In 28 career appearances with Grand Rapids, he is 20-6-0 with a 1.67 GAA, a .938 save percentage, and four shutouts. Detroit Hockey Now noted Monday that he has yet to allow more than three goals in any of his AHL regular-season games.
The award is Postava’s second in his last three weekly honors, after he also won Player of the Week at the end of last season in April. He is the first Griffin to earn the league’s weekly award this season.
A native of Valašské Meziříčí, Czechia, Postava went undrafted and signed a free-agent contract with the Red Wings on June 10, 2025. He shared the Harry “Hap” Holmes Memorial Award last season, given to the goaltenders on the AHL team that allows the fewest goals, after the Griffins led the league in that category.
His hot start stands out in a Grand Rapids crease that also includes Red Wings prospect Trey Augustine, who is still looking for his first AHL win. Detroit Hockey Now listed Augustine at 0-1-1 with a 3.90 GAA and an .875 save percentage this season.
The Griffins (3-1-1-0) are off until a weekend set with the Rockford IceHogs: Saturday, Oct. 17, at Rockford’s BMO Center at 8 p.m. ET, then Sunday, Oct. 18, at Van Andel Arena at 4 p.m.
