The Detroit Red Wings host the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Little Caesars Arena, the first of three straight home games this week. The game airs nationally on ESPN. Detroit is 1-3-1, including 1-3-0 at home; New Jersey is 2-3 and playing the second half of a back-to-back.
Goals have been the problem. The Red Wings have been shut out twice in five games, average two goals a game, and are shooting 6.1 percent, among the worst marks in the league. Half of their 10 goals came in their lone win, 5-3 over Ottawa on Oct. 6. Lucas Raymond, a 25-goal scorer in each of the past three seasons, is still looking for his first of the year. Coach Todd McLellan said that “the volume shooting has to turn into goals.”
Daniil Tarasov gave Detroit a chance in Montreal on Saturday, stopping every shot through regulation and overtime before Zachary Bolduc scored the only goal in the sixth round of a shootout in a 1-0 Canadiens win. Detroit has not named Tuesday’s starter. Tarasov said after Monday’s practice that he had not yet heard the plan.
Help could be coming up front. J.T. Compher has been on injured reserve since Oct. 8, retroactive to Oct. 4, so he is already eligible to come off it. McLellan told reporters Monday that Compher is close, per the Detroit Free Press, but left his status for Tuesday open. Mason Appleton and Marco Kasper (upper body) remain out.
New Jersey lost 4-1 to Ottawa at home on Monday despite outshooting the Senators 30-20; Arseny Gritsyuk scored the Devils’ only goal. The Devils placed Connor Brown on injured reserve and recalled Stefan Noesen from Utica, and they are also without Nick Bjugstad and Seamus Casey. Luke Evangelista is day-to-day with an illness.
It is the teams’ first meeting this season. New Jersey took last season’s series 2-1, including a 5-3 win in Detroit on April 11. After Tuesday, the Red Wings host Philadelphia on Thursday and San Jose on Saturday.
