Max Plante, the Detroit Red Wings’ second-round pick (47th overall) in the 2024 NHL Draft and the reigning Hobey Baker Award winner, is sidelined with an upper-body injury at Minnesota Duluth. Plante was hurt during the Bulldogs’ season-opening series against Long Island University and sat out UMD’s weekend series at Augustana on Oct. 9-10.

UMD coach Scott Sandelin said before the Augustana trip that Plante would miss that weekend, but the school has not given a return date. The Hockey News reported Oct. 8 that Plante is considered week-to-week.

Plante had two assists in the Bulldogs’ two-game sweep of Long Island, skating on a line with his brothers Zam and Victor. Victor Plante is also a Red Wings draft pick, taken by Detroit in the second round of the 2026 NHL Draft.

The injury comes at the start of what is expected to be Plante’s final college season. He piled up 25 goals and 27 assists for 52 points in 40 games last season on the way to the Hobey Baker, college hockey’s top individual honor. The Hockey News reported he had been projected to turn pro with the Grand Rapids Griffins at the end of this season, a plan that could stay on track if his recovery goes smoothly.

Plante was also named last week to the U.S. Collegiate Selects roster for December’s Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland. UMD’s roster includes another Red Wings prospect, defenseman Brady Cleveland, Detroit’s second-round pick in 2023.
