Red Wings interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said Wednesday that he has no interest in trading Simon Edvinsson, Detroit SportsNet’s Daniella Bruce reported. According to Bruce, Horcoff said the team wants to keep the unsigned defenseman in Detroit and called him an important piece of the team.
Horcoff added that he has been in constant contact with Edvinsson’s agent, Bruce reported. The Red Wings’ official X account reposted Bruce’s report of that comment.
The comments are the clearest public answer yet from Detroit’s front office to more than a week of trade talk. They do not mean a contract is close: there was no word Wednesday of a deal, and Edvinsson remains a restricted free agent without a contract.
Why it matters
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Oct. 3 that Edvinsson would prefer a trade out of Detroit after months without a new deal, though neither side confirmed a trade request. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported on Oct. 8 that the Bruins were among at least 10 teams to check in on him, with a sizable gap in salary separating the two sides. Horcoff has said all along that signing Edvinsson is the priority, and Wednesday’s comments go a step further by ruling out a trade outright.
Edvinsson, 23, attended training camp without a contract, returned to Sweden to skate with Frölunda when camp ended, and has since left Sweden to train on the East Coast, The Detroit News reported Tuesday. The sixth overall pick in 2021 had nine goals and 25 points in 72 games last season and averaged 22:21 of ice time, second on the team behind Moritz Seider.
Under NHL rules, an unsigned restricted free agent must sign by 5 p.m. Eastern on Dec. 1 to be eligible to play this season.
