Alex DeBrincat and the Detroit Red Wings are finalizing a seven-year, $91 million contract extension, TSN and The Athletic insider Chris Johnston reported Tuesday night. The report is unconfirmed: the Red Wings have not announced a deal, and TSN noted the contract had not yet been signed.
The reported deal would carry an average annual value of $13 million and include a full no-trade clause for the first four years and a limited no-trade clause for the final three. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman posted on X Tuesday evening that the sides were “closing in on approximately 7 x $13M,” The Hockey News reported, and The Athletic’s Max Bultman and Johnston reported the same terms.
The reports surfaced shortly after Detroit’s 5-4 overtime loss to New Jersey at Little Caesars Arena, a game in which DeBrincat scored twice and added an assist. The 28-year-old Farmington Hills native has four goals and four assists through six games this season.
Where things stand
DeBrincat is in the final season of the four-year, $31.5 million contract he signed when Detroit acquired him from Ottawa in July 2023, a deal with a cap hit just under $7.9 million. He has not missed a game since joining the Red Wings, and he has said publicly that he wants to stay in Detroit.
If the extension goes through, it would lock up one of the team’s top scorers during a turbulent stretch for the organization. Steve Yzerman stepped away as general manager over the summer, Shawn Horcoff is serving as interim GM, Dylan Larkin asked for a trade and no longer wears the captain’s “C,” and restricted free agent defenseman Simon Edvinsson remains unsigned. The Red Wings are 1-3-2 heading into Thursday’s home game against Philadelphia.
Mitten Hockey will update this story if the Red Wings confirm the extension.
