The Detroit Red Wings (1-3-2) host the Philadelphia Flyers (0-5-3) on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at Little Caesars Arena, looking for their second win of the season against a team that has yet to win one. The game is nationally televised, and it is Detroit’s annual We Are Hockeytown: Hockey Fights Cancer Night.
Daniil Tarasov gets the start in goal, a plan first reported by Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press. Tarasov has allowed one goal in two appearances, including 30 saves in a 1-0 shootout loss at Montreal on Oct. 10, and carries a .974 save percentage. John Gibson, who made 32 saves in Tuesday’s 5-4 overtime loss to New Jersey, is 1-3-1 with an .863 save percentage in five starts.
Lineup notes
Coach Todd McLellan shuffled his forwards at Wednesday’s practice, according to lines reported by MLive’s Ansar Khan. Lucas Raymond, who has four assists but no goals in six games and has gone 13 games without a goal dating to last season, dropped to a third line with Michael Rasmussen and Andrew Copp. Nate Danielson moved up alongside Dylan Larkin and Viktor Arvidsson, while the second line of Alex DeBrincat, Emmitt Finnie, and Michael Brandsegg-Nygård stayed together after producing three goals against the Devils. J.T. Compher skated on a fourth line with Sheldon Dries and Keegan Kolesar. Raymond remains on the top power-play unit.
Marco Kasper (upper body) remains on injured reserve and did not practice Wednesday. He has missed five straight games.
Storylines
It is Detroit’s first game since signing DeBrincat to a seven-year, $91 million extension on Wednesday. The Farmington Hills native leads the team with four goals and eight points and scored twice against New Jersey. Brandsegg-Nygård has two goals and two assists over his last three games.
Off the ice, interim general manager Shawn Horcoff described Larkin’s trade request as “status quo” when he met reporters Wednesday, and said the team has no interest in trading unsigned defenseman Simon Edvinsson.
Hockey Fights Cancer Night includes a league-wide “I Fight For” moment in the first period, the reveal of a specialty goalie mask that will later be auctioned, and an online auction of autographed lavender jerseys that opens at 7:30 p.m. and runs through Oct. 22. Proceeds from the evening benefit the American Cancer Society, Game On Cancer, and the Detroit Red Wings Foundation. Doors open at 6 p.m.
