Andrew Copp scored with 4:38 left in the third period and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 on Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena, snapping a three-game winless skid (0-1-2) on Hockey Fights Cancer Night. Rookie defenseman Anton Johansson scored his first NHL goal, and Daniil Tarasov made 17 saves for his first win in a Red Wings uniform.

Detroit improved to 2-3-2. Philadelphia fell to 0-6-3, extending the longest winless start to a season in Flyers history to nine games.

How the goals came

Matvei Michkov gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead at 17:32 of the first period, getting a piece of the puck at the right side of the net for his team-leading third goal of the season. Dylan Larkin rang a shot off the post late in the period.

Johansson tied it at 4:31 of the second. An Owen Tippett turnover sent Larkin and Johansson away on a 2-on-1, and Larkin slid the puck across for Johansson to one-time it from the left circle past Joseph Woll. Justin Faulk had the other assist. Johansson is the third Red Wings player to score his first NHL goal this month, joining William Wallinder and Michael Brandsegg-Nygård.

The winner came from the third line at 15:22 of the third. Nate Danielson won a puck battle below the goal line and moved it to Michael Rasmussen behind the net, and Rasmussen fed Copp at the doorstep. It was Copp’s first goal of the season. Detroit Hockey Now noted it was Rasmussen’s first point since Jan. 5, ending a 32-game drought.

In goal and on special teams

Tarasov, who allowed no goals in regulation or overtime in Saturday’s 1-0 shootout loss at Montreal, has given up one goal in two starts. His biggest stop came with 21 seconds left in the second period, when he denied Noah Cates on a short-handed 2-on-1. Woll made 24 saves for Philadelphia as Detroit outshot the Flyers 26-18.

Neither power play scored. Detroit’s best chance came on a Tyson Foerster tripping minor against Alex DeBrincat that carried over from the second period into the third. The Red Wings again dressed 11 forwards and seven defensemen, with Carter Mazur a healthy scratch.
