The Detroit Red Wings host the San Jose Sharks on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Little Caesars Arena, closing a three-game homestand in the teams’ first meeting of the season. The game streams on ESPN+ and airs on Detroit SportsNet.
Where things stand
Detroit is 2-3-2 and has earned a point in three straight games after Thursday’s 2-1 win over Philadelphia, when Andrew Copp scored the winner with 4:38 left and rookie defenseman Anton Johansson scored his first NHL goal. The Red Wings are 2-3-1 at home and 1-1-1 in one-goal games, and goals have been hard to find: they were held scoreless through regulation and overtime at Montreal last Saturday and managed two against the winless Flyers.
San Jose is 4-3-0 and 2-1-0 on the road, arriving after a 3-2 shootout win over Nashville.
Injuries and lineup
Forwards Marco Kasper (upper body) and Mason Appleton remain out for Detroit, and J.T. Compher is day-to-day. Viktor Arvidsson was helped off after blocking a shot in the first period Thursday but returned for the second. Detroit has dressed 11 forwards and seven defensemen in recent games, with Carter Mazur a healthy scratch Thursday.
For San Jose, defenseman Darnell Nurse is day-to-day with an upper-body injury and forward Quentin Musty is out (upper body).
In goal
Detroit had not named a starter as of Saturday morning. Daniil Tarasov has started the last two games and allowed one goal in regulation across both, while John Gibson is 1-3-1 with a 3.76 goals-against average. Yaroslav Askarov is 2-3-0 with a 4.00 GAA for San Jose.
Last meeting
Detroit beat San Jose 4-2 when the teams last met on Jan. 16.
