Alex DeBrincat tied the game with 1:33 left in regulation, and Lucas Raymond scored the only goal of the shootout as the Detroit Red Wings came from two goals down to beat the San Jose Sharks 4-3 on Saturday night at Little Caesars Arena. It was Detroit’s first time winning back-to-back games this season, and the Red Wings improved to 3-3-2 to close their homestand.

How the goals came

Justin Faulk opened the scoring on Detroit’s first power play at 12:47 of the first period, his shot from just inside the blue line deflecting through traffic. Emmitt Finnie and Michael Rasmussen assisted. Dmitry Orlov answered on a San Jose power play at 17:39, from Ivar Stenberg and Macklin Celebrini.

Celebrini put the Sharks ahead at 4:55 of the second with a slap shot from the slot after a William Wallinder turnover in the Detroit zone. Stenberg made it 3-1 on another power play at 2:48 of the third, with Alexander Wennberg and Celebrini assisting.

Finnie cut the lead about two minutes later, tapping in a loose puck off a Michael Brandsegg-Nygård attempt. With John Gibson pulled for an extra attacker, DeBrincat tipped in the equalizer from a net-front scramble, assisted by Viktor Arvidsson and Moritz Seider. It was his team-leading fifth goal of the season and the 299th of his NHL career.

Overtime, shootout, and goaltending

Detroit killed an Andrew Copp penalty in overtime to get to the shootout, where Raymond scored his first goal of the season after seven games without one. Gibson made 32 saves, and Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 25 for San Jose. Celebrini finished with a goal and two assists and leads the Sharks with 11 points in six games.

Penalties were again a problem for the Red Wings, who allowed two power-play goals. Detroit dressed 11 forwards for the fourth straight game, with J.T. Compher, Marco Kasper, and Mason Appleton out injured. Raymond moved back to a line with Dylan Larkin and Arvidsson, and Finnie centered DeBrincat and Brandsegg-Nygård.

What’s next

The Red Wings start a four-game Western road trip Tuesday at Seattle at 9:40 p.m. on Detroit SportsNet, then visit Vancouver on Thursday, Calgary on Oct. 24, and Edmonton on Oct. 26.
