Red Wings goaltending prospect Trey Augustine has his first professional win. Detroit’s 2023 second-round pick (41st overall), now in his first full season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, stopped 27 of 29 shots in a 4-2 victory over the Rockford IceHogs on Saturday night at the BMO Center in Rockford, Illinois, and was named the game’s third star.
The win came in Augustine’s fifth AHL start. According to Detroit Hockey Now, he had gone 0-3-1 in his first four, a stretch that included two starts last spring after he left Michigan State and signed with Detroit. His entry-level contract, signed March 31, 2026, runs three seasons through 2028-29 at a cap hit of $1.075 million.
Augustine had little to do early, as Grand Rapids outshot Rockford 15-4 in a scoreless first period, but he faced 25 shots over the final 40 minutes. The Griffins built a 3-0 lead in the second on goals by Carter Bear, Dylan James, and John Leonard. Rockford’s Nick Lardis and Brett Seney scored 2:48 apart in the third to make it a one-goal game before Augustine made two late stops on Lardis and Leonard sealed it with an empty-netter.
The Griffins improved to 4-1-1-0. Augustine is sharing the Grand Rapids net with Michal Postava, who was named AHL Player of the Week on Oct. 12 and is 3-0-0 with a .950 save percentage. Detroit Hockey Now reports Postava is expected to start Sunday’s rematch.
