ESPN broadcaster John Buccigross said Friday that he expects the Detroit Red Wings to trade Dylan Larkin within roughly 7 to 10 days, according to Detroit Sports Nation. Buccigross made the comment on Frank Seravalli’s Frankly Hockey show and said he had recently received information pointing to a trade. The report is unconfirmed, and the Red Wings have not announced a deal or said that one is close.

Buccigross did not name a destination, a trade partner, or any players involved, and he did not describe the talks as being at an advanced stage with a specific team. Larkin’s trade protection gives him a say in where he goes, which has been a sticking point in the process.

How we got here

Larkin, 30, asked the Red Wings for a trade in the offseason and addressed the request on the first day of training camp in September. He is no longer the team’s captain, and Detroit has gone without one this season. He made his season debut Oct. 6 against Ottawa, and he skated on a line with Lucas Raymond and Viktor Arvidsson in Saturday’s 4-3 shootout win over San Jose.

Mitten Hockey reported on Oct. 17 that TSN’s Darren Dreger had said Detroit wants three or four pieces in any Larkin deal, including two high-end prospects, a first-round pick, and a top-nine forward. Minnesota and Montreal have been among the teams linked to Larkin in earlier reports, but neither was tied to Buccigross’s comments.

Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff is running the hockey operations department while owner Chris Ilitch searches for a permanent leader, and any trade would come during that search. The Red Wings open a four-game Western road trip Tuesday in Seattle.
