The Saginaw Spirit fell 2-1 to the Owen Sound Attack on Sunday evening at the Dow Event Center, as Attack goaltender Ryerson Leenders made 33 saves to end Saginaw’s five-game winning run. The Spirit dropped to 6-3-2-0, and Owen Sound snapped a four-game skid to improve to 3-8.
All three goals came in the first period. Harry Nansi put Owen Sound ahead on the power play at 6:52, and Alexander Lisi made it 2-0 at 9:50 with his first OHL goal, assisted by Jace Voortman, who picked up his first OHL point, and Max Fransen.
Dima Zhilkin cut the lead in half at 16:06, scoring on a 5-on-3 power play right off a faceoff win, with assists to Braidy Wassilyn and Jacob Cloutier. The OHL’s scoring leader has now scored in seven consecutive games and has at least a point in all 11 of Saginaw’s games this season.
Saginaw controlled much of the rest of the night, outshooting Owen Sound 34-23, but Leenders held firm, stopping all 11 Spirit shots in the third period and turning away point shots after the Spirit pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. Brady Knowling made 21 saves on 23 shots for Saginaw. The Spirit went 1-for-5 on the power play, and Owen Sound went 1-for-4.
The game closed a busy three-in-three weekend for Saginaw, which beat the Sarnia Sting 9-2 in Sarnia on Friday and 7-4 at home on Saturday. For Owen Sound, it capped a West Division road swing through Windsor, Flint, and Saginaw.
Next: The Spirit host the Flint Firebirds on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7:05 p.m. at the Dow Event Center.
