The Detroit Red Wings assigned forwards Carter Bear and Chase Stillman to the Grand Rapids Griffins on Friday, giving their AHL affiliate two more bodies up front on the day of its home opener against the Manitoba Moose at Van Andel Arena.
Bear, whom Detroit selected 13th overall in the 2025 NHL Draft, began the season on the injured non-roster list after an upper-body injury in training camp. He played in Detroit’s preseason opener against Columbus, logging just over 15 minutes, before coach Todd McLellan said in late September that he would miss up to 10 days. The assignment is the first sign he is ready to play this season.
The 19-year-old left wing arrives in Grand Rapids after a decorated junior career with the WHL’s Everett Silvertips. He scored 102 goals and 218 points in 195 regular-season games, helped Everett win its first Ed Chynoweth Cup last spring, and reached the Memorial Cup final, where the Silvertips fell to Kitchener. He also played two games for Canada’s bronze-medal team at the World Juniors.
Stillman’s assignment comes a day after the Red Wings placed him on waivers, and it means he went unclaimed. The 23-year-old, a 2021 first-round pick of New Jersey, signed a one-year, two-way deal with Detroit in July after stops in the Devils, Penguins, and Canucks organizations. He opened the season on the injured non-roster list and has 45 points in 143 career AHL games.
Both players are eligible for Friday night’s 7 p.m. home opener, which kicks off the Griffins’ 30th-anniversary season in Grand Rapids. The Red Wings, meanwhile, host the Seattle Kraken at Little Caesars Arena on Friday.
