Western Michigan swept its home-and-home series with Ferris State, winning 6-0 at Lawson Ice Arena on Thursday, Oct. 8, and 5-1 at Ewigleben Ice Arena on Friday, Oct. 9. The No. 8 Broncos are 2-0-0 to start their final season at Lawson, and Ferris State is 0-3-1.

Quentin Miller was the constant. He stopped all 26 shots in Thursday’s opener and 21 of 22 on Friday, allowing only a second-period power-play goal by Adyn Merrick across 120 minutes. Western Michigan outshot Ferris State 80-48 over the two games.

Joona Väisänen and William Whitelaw scored in both games, and Väisänen finished the weekend with two goals and two assists. Garrett Szydlowski scored twice Thursday, and freshman Nicholas Sykora scored his first college goal. Friday belonged to Adam Benák, who assisted on four goals, and to the depth scorers: Zaccharya Wisdom, Bobby Cowan, and Zach Nehring all scored for the first time this season.

The biggest change between games was the power play. The Broncos went 2-for-6 on Thursday and 1-for-7 on Friday, while the penalty kill allowed just one goal on 11 Ferris State chances across the weekend.

Western Michigan plays a home-and-home with Notre Dame on Oct. 16-17, starting at Lawson, then visits Michigan on Oct. 23.
