No. 12 Michigan Tech split its nonconference series at St. Cloud State, winning 3-2 in overtime on Friday, Oct. 9, and losing 5-3 on Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Huskies are 3-1-0 after their first loss of the season.
Friday was a comeback. Tech trailed 2-0 midway through the second period before Teydon Trembecky scored, Reid Andresen tied it in the third, and Trembecky won it 2:09 into overtime on a goal that survived video review and a goaltender-interference challenge. It was Tech’s first win over St. Cloud State since 2013. Saturday was a back-and-forth game that was tied 1-1, 2-2, and 3-3 before Joseph Belisle’s goal with 11:54 left. Elias Jansson, Isaac Gordon, and Michael Cicek scored for Tech, with Gordon and Cicek getting their first goals of the season.
Owen Bartoszkiewicz started both nights and made 62 saves, including 32 on Friday. St. Cloud State outshot Tech 69-62 over the weekend. Special teams were the sore spot: Tech went 0-for-7 on the power play and allowed two power-play goals on seven St. Cloud chances, though Jansson’s shorthanded goal opened Saturday’s scoring. Coach Bill Muckalt said after Friday’s game that the special teams and discipline needed to improve.
Tech finishes its nonconference schedule at home against Alaska on Oct. 16-17, Hall of Fame weekend in Houghton.
