The Detroit Red Wings placed defenseman Simon Edvinsson on the injured non-roster list on Wednesday, Oct. 14, because of his ongoing contract dispute. Edvinsson, 23, is a restricted free agent and has not played this season while he and the team try to agree on a new deal.
The designation is listed as contract-related, not injury-related. It formally moves Edvinsson off Detroit’s active list while he remains unsigned, and it came the same day interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said publicly that he has no interest in trading him.
Where things stand
Edvinsson’s three-year entry-level contract, which carried an $894,167 cap hit, expired after the 2025-26 season. His qualifying offer is $874,125, and he is eligible to sign an offer sheet with another team. The sixth overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft had nine goals and 25 points in 72 games last season and averaged 22:21 of ice time, second on the team behind Moritz Seider.
He has missed Detroit’s first seven games. Detroit Hockey Now reported this week that the two sides do not appear close to a deal and that, coming into the season, Edvinsson was presumed to be seeking roughly $9 million to $10 million a year. Horcoff has called signing him a priority and said the team is open to any structure, without sharing details.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Oct. 3 that Edvinsson would prefer a trade, a request neither side has confirmed. Since training camp ended he has skated with Frölunda in Sweden and, according to The Detroit News, moved his training to the East Coast. Horcoff said Wednesday that he has been in constant contact with Edvinsson’s agent.
Under NHL rules, an unsigned restricted free agent must sign by 5 p.m. Eastern on Dec. 1 to be eligible to play this season. The Red Wings, 2-3-2 after Thursday’s 2-1 win over Philadelphia, host the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.
