The Detroit Red Wings reassigned goaltender Carter Gylander from the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye to the Grand Rapids Griffins on Wednesday, the Griffins announced. The team gave no reason for the move, which brings a third goalie back to Grand Rapids hours before the Griffins host the Texas Stars at Van Andel Arena.

The timing points to Detroit. John Gibson left Tuesday’s 4-2 loss in Tampa Bay after the first period with an injury, and coach Todd McLellan had no update on him after the game. Detroit Hockey Now’s Bob Duff wrote Wednesday that Griffins goalie Michal Postava, the AHL’s Goaltender of the Month for October, is the logical call-up to pair with Daniil Tarasov. As of Wednesday afternoon, the Red Wings had not announced a recall or an update on Gibson. Detroit hosts Vegas on Thursday night.

Gylander, 25, is in his third pro season. He made his season debut with Grand Rapids on Oct. 24, stopping 24 shots in a 5-2 win over Cleveland for the 50th win of his pro career, and was sent to Toledo on Oct. 29. In 12 career AHL games he is 10-1-1 with a 2.14 goals-against average, a .926 save percentage, and one shutout. Last season he went 7-0-1 with a .942 save percentage in eight games for the Griffins.

Most of his pro work has come in Toledo, where he is 40-20-10 with four shutouts in the regular season. He also went 12-6 in the 2025 Kelly Cup Playoffs, backstopping the Walleye to the Kelly Cup Finals.

The Griffins (8-1-1-1) also have rookie Trey Augustine, who is 2-1-2 with a 2.92 goals-against average. Postava is 5-0 with a 1.20 goals-against average and a .955 save percentage. Wednesday’s game against Texas starts at 7 p.m. on AHLTV on FloHockey and WOOD 106.9 FM and 1300 AM.
