The Detroit Red Wings recalled goaltender Michal Postava from the Grand Rapids Griffins under emergency conditions on Wednesday, the Griffins announced. The move comes a day after John Gibson left Tuesday’s 4-2 loss at Tampa Bay after the first period with an injury, and it gives Detroit a second healthy goalie behind Daniil Tarasov going into Thursday’s home game against the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Red Wings have not announced an update on Gibson’s status. Coach Todd McLellan had no update after Tuesday’s game, and Tarasov stopped all 12 shots he faced in relief.
Postava arrives on the best run of his pro career. He was named the AHL’s Goaltender of the Month for October after going 4-0 with a 1.25 goals-against average and a .954 save percentage, and he is 5-0 this season with a 1.20 goals-against average and a .955 save percentage in five games for Grand Rapids.
He has already had a taste of the NHL this season. Postava made his NHL debut in relief at Vancouver on Oct. 22, then won his first NHL start on Oct. 26 in Edmonton, a 4-3 shootout victory over the Oilers.
The recall follows a busy day of goalie moves in the organization. Earlier Wednesday, the Red Wings reassigned Carter Gylander from the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye to Grand Rapids, where he joins rookie Trey Augustine. The Griffins (8-1-1-1) host the Texas Stars at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Van Andel Arena, carrying a seven-game point streak.
