Michigan State sophomore forward Anthony Romani has been named the Big Ten’s Second Star of the Week after scoring twice in the Spartans’ 5-3 win over then-No. 8 North Dakota in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game on Oct. 31 in Austin, Texas. The conference announced the honor Tuesday. It is the second weekly Big Ten award of Romani’s career.

Romani opened the scoring in the second period with a power-play one-timer from the left faceoff dot. With the game tied 2-2 in the third, he took advantage of a North Dakota defensive breakdown and beat the goaltender high to the glove side to put Michigan State ahead for good.

The two goals gave Romani a team-leading seven this season, along with three assists for 10 points in six games. His goal total ranks third in the Big Ten, and his 1.17 goals per game ranks second nationally. He is already halfway to the 14 goals he scored in 37 games as a freshman. Coach Adam Nightingale told The State News earlier this season that Romani has “taken a huge step.”

Romani is the second Spartan to earn a weekly Big Ten honor this season, joining freshman goaltender Joshua Ravensbergen, who was named Third Star on Oct. 20.

Michigan State returns to Ron Mason Rink at Munn Ice Arena this weekend for a two-game nonconference series against No. 13 Boston University. Friday’s opener is at 7 p.m. and streams on B1G+, and the teams meet again Saturday.
