The Detroit Red Wings beat the Florida Panthers 5-3 on Monday night at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Fla., scoring twice in the first 2:53 of the third period to take control. Carter Mazur scored his first NHL goal, and Detroit improved to 7-5-3 with its third win in four games.
Mazur opened the scoring at 5:26 of the first period, finishing a play that started with a Moritz Seider pass from the right point. Sam Reinhart answered for Florida at 14:19, stretching his goal streak to three games. Alex DeBrincat put Detroit back in front 1:26 into the second, finishing a cross-ice feed from Viktor Arvidsson on a 3-on-1 for his seventh goal of the season. Aaron Ekblad tied it again at 15:25 of the second with a short-handed goal, his first of the year.
The third period swung the game. Justin Faulk scored on the power play at 2:08, set up by Andrew Copp, and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard followed 45 seconds later, taking a shovel pass from Lucas Raymond and beating Jacob Markstrom from the slot. Sam Bennett pulled Florida within a goal with an extra attacker on at 16:40, but Emmitt Finnie hit the empty net with three seconds left.
Faulk and Brandsegg-Nygard each finished with a goal and an assist, and Copp and Seider had two assists apiece. Daniil Tarasov made 23 saves against the team he played for last season. Markstrom stopped 24 shots in his first start since Oct. 17; he had missed the previous five games with an upper-body injury. The Panthers, who never led, saw a three-game winning streak end and fell to 8-5-2.
Detroit is 6-2-1 over its last nine games but still sits near the bottom of a tightly bunched Atlantic Division. The Red Wings finish the back-to-back Tuesday night against the Lightning in Tampa, the second game of a stretch of four games in seven nights. Florida hosts Chicago on Wednesday.
