A record-tying night in Kalamazoo, a five-point night in Columbus, and a hat trick at Little Caesars Arena led the week of Oct. 26 through Nov. 1 across the 15 Michigan teams Mitten Hockey follows. Here are the week’s Three Stars.

1. William Whitelaw, Western Michigan

Week: 4 goals, 3 assists, 7 points in two games vs. LIU

Whitelaw’s Thursday was historic. He scored four goals and added an assist on seven shots in a 10-2 win over LIU on Oct. 29, tying the NCHC single-game record for goals. It was his first collegiate hat trick and the most goals by a Bronco in a game since Ethen Frank scored four against St. Cloud State on Nov. 19, 2021, according to Western Michigan.

He did not let up Friday, setting up two goals in a 7-4 win. That gave him seven points for the weekend and put him at seven goals and 14 points on the season heading into NCHC play. What sets the week apart is how it came: a forward finishing at volume one night and feeding teammates the next.

2. Michael Hage, Michigan

Week: 1 goal, 5 assists, 6 points in two games at Ohio State

Hage had a hand in every Michigan goal in Sunday’s 5-4 overtime win in Columbus. He assisted on power-play goals by Malcolm Spence and J.P. Hurlbert in the second period, scored his fourth goal of the season in the third, set up Spence’s tying goal with 1:12 left in regulation, and then helped set up Adam Valentini’s winner 4:17 into 3-on-3 overtime.

That is one goal, four assists, and nine shots in one game, after he also picked up an assist on Cole McKinney’s shorthanded goal in the series opener. When the Wolverines needed someone to drive play in their first Big Ten weekend, the puck kept finding Hage, and he kept making something happen with it.

3. Viktor Arvidsson, Red Wings

Big night: 3 goals, 1 assist vs. Chicago on Oct. 29

Arvidsson took over the third period of a 4-1 win over the Blackhawks. He tied the game at 7:31 of the second, assisted on Lucas Raymond’s power-play goal, put Detroit up 3-1 at 15:26 of the third, and finished the hat trick into an empty net at 16:45.

It was the sixth hat trick and third four-point game of his NHL career, per the Associated Press recap. For a veteran in a supporting role, a night like this is exactly the kind of scoring lift a team needs during a busy stretch of the schedule.

Honorable mentions

  • Joona Väisänen, Western Michigan: 3 goals, 1 assist, and seven shots on Oct. 29. He became the sixth defenseman in NCHC history with a hat trick, and he and Whitelaw are the first NCHC teammates with hat tricks in the same game.
  • Michal Postava, Red Wings and Griffins: 25 saves and a perfect three-for-three in the shootout in his first NHL start at Edmonton on Oct. 26, then 25 more saves at Chicago on Nov. 1 to improve to 5-0 in the AHL.
