Viktor Arvidsson scored three goals and added an assist, and the Red Wings beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 on Thursday night at Little Caesars Arena. It was Detroit’s first game since the team suspended Dylan Larkin without pay earlier in the day, and Arvidsson’s sixth career hat trick and third career four-point game carried a team playing without its longtime top center.

How it happened

Connor Bedard gave Chicago a 1-0 lead at 5:59 of the first period, backhanding in a rebound of a Wyatt Kaiser shot, with Roman Kantserov also assisting. Detroit came up empty on three power plays before Arvidsson tied it at 7:31 of the second, deflecting William Wallinder’s point shot past Spencer Knight. Alex DeBrincat had the other assist.

The Red Wings took the lead 1:09 into the third. With Patrick Kane in the box for high-sticking in his return to Little Caesars Arena, Lucas Raymond scored on the power play from the right circle, set up by Moritz Seider and Arvidsson. Arvidsson made it 3-1 at 15:26, tipping home a rebound of a DeBrincat shot with J.T. Compher also assisting, and finished the hat trick with an empty-net goal at 16:45, assisted by Emmitt Finnie. DeBrincat finished with two assists.

In goal

John Gibson made 18 saves on 19 shots. His biggest stop came in the second period, when he got a pad on Frank Nazar’s penalty shot, awarded after Nazar was taken down by Andreas Englund at 11:18. Knight made 27 saves for Chicago. Detroit outshot the Blackhawks 31-19, won 29 of 52 faceoffs, and went 1-for-4 on the power play. Chicago did not score with the man advantage.

Lineup notes

Sheldon Dries, recalled from Grand Rapids earlier Thursday, played 12:57 with three hits and won all three of his faceoffs. Larkin was suspended hours before puck drop after telling the team he would not play again until he is traded. Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff said Detroit will keep exploring trades.
