The Red Wings have suspended Dylan Larkin without pay. Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff announced the move Thursday evening in a team statement, hours after Larkin told the organization he would not play again until he is traded. The statement said Larkin will no longer play for Detroit and that the team is “disappointed by his decision,” citing his obligations to the organization and his teammates.
What Horcoff said
Horcoff said the Red Wings will keep exploring trades involving Larkin. He noted that any deal needs Larkin’s approval and must serve Detroit’s best interests and long-term goals. He also thanked the team’s coaches and players for staying focused and competing every day. The statement did not say how long the suspension will last.
TSN’s Darren Dreger reported that Larkin will forfeit more than $40,000 a day while suspended, according to HockeyFeed.
How the day unfolded
Larkin missed practice Wednesday and Thursday’s optional morning skate. Coach Todd McLellan ruled him out of Thursday night’s home game against the Chicago Blackhawks that morning and said Horcoff would address the situation. Larkin’s agent, Pat Brisson, then said in a statement that Larkin had had enough and would sit out until Detroit makes a trade, and MLive’s Ansar Khan reported that the team was expected to suspend him.
No trade has been announced. ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reported that the Minnesota Wild, Washington Capitals, and Utah Mammoth are at the front of trade talks, all of them teams on Larkin’s 10-team approved list, according to HockeyFeed. An unverified claim Thursday that Larkin had been traded to the New Jersey Devils has not been confirmed.
Larkin, 30, has four seasons left after this one on an eight-year, $69.6 million contract with an $8.7 million cap hit, and a full no-trade clause. He requested a trade in the summer and was stripped of the captaincy before training camp. He has six points in 10 games this season.
