Update (Oct. 29): The Red Wings have confirmed this. Read the latest: Red Wings suspend Dylan Larkin without pay; Horcoff says trade talks continue.
Dylan Larkin will not play for the Red Wings on Thursday night against the Chicago Blackhawks, and he may have already played his last game in Detroit. Coach Todd McLellan announced the move after the morning skate and said interim general manager Shawn Horcoff would address the situation later. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Thursday that Larkin is not expected to play again until he is traded, according to Detroit Hockey Now and Detroit Sports Nation.
The Red Wings have not announced a trade, and Horcoff had not spoken publicly as of Thursday afternoon. Detroit Sports Nation, citing MLive’s Ansar Khan, reported that Horcoff is preparing a statement on Larkin. This story will be updated when he speaks.
How we got here
Larkin missed practice Wednesday, which McLellan called a maintenance day, and said at the time he expected Larkin to play against Chicago. By Thursday morning he was out of the lineup. Detroit Hockey Now reported that an NHL source expected a trade was close, and TSN’s Pierre LeBrun said talks around Larkin have picked up, according to The Hockey News.
Larkin’s trade request became public in June. The Red Wings removed him as captain on Sept. 11, a role he had held since January 2021, and Detroit started the season without one. His approved trade list grew to 10 teams last week: the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, Dallas Stars, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, Utah Mammoth, Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils, and Colorado Avalanche. Reports this week also tied the Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres to Larkin, though neither is on his list. Horcoff’s reported asking price has been two high-end prospects, an NHL-ready top-nine forward, and a first-round pick.
Where things stand
Larkin, 30, has six points (two goals, four assists) in 10 games this season after missing the preseason and the first two games with an upper-body injury. He has five seasons left on an eight-year, $69.6 million contract with an $8.7 million cap hit. The Waterford native, drafted 15th overall in 2014, has 649 points (278 goals, 371 assists) in 818 regular-season games, all with Detroit, and scored a career-high 34 goals last season. He ranks 10th in Red Wings history in goals and points, per NHL.com.
Detroit (5-4-3) hosts Chicago at 7:30 p.m. at Little Caesars Arena, back from a four-game road trip and last in the Atlantic Division. The game streams on Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+. Our full preview is here: Red Wings Game Preview: vs. Blackhawks (Oct. 29).
