The Red Wings say they have patched things up with Dylan Larkin. Whether that changes anything is another question. Jimmy Devellano, the team’s alternate governor and longtime front-office executive, said on the latest episode of “Ozzy and Keats,” the Red Wings podcast hosted by Chris Osgood and John Keating, that he, interim general manager Shawn Horcoff, and coach Todd McLellan have “kissed and made up” with the former captain. According to the Detroit Free Press, though, Larkin’s trade request has not been withdrawn.
What Devellano said
Devellano said he has told Larkin personally to “let bygones be bygones,” that he is a good player, and that the team would really like him to stay. He said he wished the request had never happened but could not discuss the reasons behind it because he cannot speak for Larkin. He added that he does not know how the situation will play out, called Larkin’s contract a very good one, and said the team is trying to find something that works for both Larkin and the Red Wings.
The request hasn’t moved
Helene St. James of the Free Press reported Wednesday that people in the league with close knowledge of the situation say the request has not been rescinded, and Larkin has said nothing publicly about a reconciliation. The paper noted the team has tried to make Larkin comfortable, including telling him he did not need to be on the bench for opening-night introductions, where he was booed at Little Caesars Arena, or attend a sponsors event the week before the season. Larkin showed up for both.
The timing also matters. Daily Faceoff reported that the interview was recorded several days before Tuesday’s Free Press report that Larkin’s approved trade list has grown to 10 teams: the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, Dallas Stars, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, Utah Mammoth, Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils, and Colorado Avalanche. None of them are in Canada.
Where things stand
Larkin, 30, is in the fourth season of an eight-year, $69.6 million contract with an $8.7 million cap hit, and his full no-trade clause gives him control over where he can be traded. He was stripped of the captaincy before training camp and has five points in seven games this season, according to Daily Faceoff. The Red Wings have missed the playoffs for a franchise-record 10 straight seasons. Detroit has not announced any trade.
