Dylan Larkin’s list of approved trade destinations now includes 10 teams, and for the first time all of them have been named publicly. Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reported the full list Tuesday, citing a person familiar with the situation. The report is unconfirmed, and the Red Wings have not commented on it or announced any trade.
Per the report, the list is made up of the three teams Larkin named when his trade request became public in June (the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, and Vegas Golden Knights), the Dallas Stars, who were added soon after, and six more: the Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche, New Jersey Devils, Tampa Bay Lightning, Utah Mammoth, and Washington Capitals. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun had reported last week that the list had grown to 10 teams and did not include the Montreal Canadiens, but the other names had not been reported together until now.
Kings reportedly interested
LeBrun added a new name to the conversation Tuesday on TSN’s “Early Trading,” saying the Los Angeles Kings are interested and that general manager Ken Holland has been making calls, according to a summary of the segment by Dose.ca. Holland ran the Red Wings when they drafted Larkin in the first round in 2014. LeBrun noted the Kings are not on Larkin’s list, so a deal with Los Angeles would require Larkin to agree to it.
Where things stand
Larkin, 30, holds a full no-trade clause, so he controls where he can be traded. He is in the fourth season of an eight-year, $69.6 million contract that carries an $8.7 million cap hit through 2030-31. He was stripped of the captaincy before training camp and had one goal and two assists in six games entering Tuesday night’s game in Seattle, the start of a four-game road trip.
The latest reports follow a week of speculation about the timing of a deal. Mitten Hockey reported Oct. 17 that TSN’s Darren Dreger described Detroit’s asking price as two high-end prospects, a first-round pick, and a top-nine forward, and on Oct. 18 that ESPN’s John Buccigross expected a trade within seven to 10 days. Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff called Larkin’s situation “status quo” last week, and owner Chris Ilitch has said he has no deadline for hiring a new head of hockey operations.
