How it happened
Edmonton went ahead early when a Draisaitl centering pass glanced in off Podkolzin’s skate. Arvidsson answered midway through the second, one-timing Raymond’s cross-ice feed on the power play for his fifth goal of the season.
The third period swung back and forth. Howard scored on an Oilers power play, and Finnie tied it 30 seconds later after Arvidsson dug the puck out from behind the net. Dach then tipped Shea’s point shot past Postava for his first goal of the season, a goal that stood after a video review for a possible high stick. With Postava pulled for an extra attacker, Larkin went five-hole on Tristan Jarry to force overtime, with Raymond and Seider earning the assists.
Postava made a key stop late to help get the game to overtime, a save the NHL highlighted on X, and then kept it tied in the extra session by turning aside Evan Bouchard’s wrist shot with nine seconds left.
Goalies
Postava, recalled from Grand Rapids under emergency conditions last week, was making his second NHL appearance after stopping seven of eight shots in relief of John Gibson in Thursday’s 5-2 win at Vancouver. He is the third Red Wings goalie in 25 years to win his first NHL start, joining Petr Mrazek in 2013 and Jimmy Howard in 2005. “I feel like a kid,” Postava told reporters afterward. Jarry made 26 saves for Edmonton (8-2-2).
Notes
- Seider’s assist on the tying goal was his 207th NHL point, tying Dennis Seidenberg for third among German-born defensemen.
- Connor McDavid had an assist, stretching his season-opening point streak to 12 games, which ties the NHL record for the longest to start a season.
- Oilers forward Zach Hyman left in the second period after a hit from Andreas Englund sent his head into the glass. Edmonton coach Mike Babcock said it was Hyman’s second injury of the season.
- Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said he was proud of how the group responded after Saturday’s 4-1 loss in Calgary.
