The Red Wings are holding trade discussions with as many as 10 teams about unsigned defenseman Simon Edvinsson, and the San Jose Sharks and Boston Bruins are among the interested clubs, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported. The report is unconfirmed. The Red Wings have not announced any talks, and interim general manager Shawn Horcoff has said publicly that he wants to sign Edvinsson, not move him.

The detail adds to LeBrun’s earlier report, covered here Wednesday morning, that Edvinsson and agent J.P. Barry met with Horcoff late last week without a breakthrough. According to TSN, Detroit is keeping the trade conversations going as a fallback in case the standoff gets worse, even as it continues trying to reach a contract.

What a deal could cost

LeBrun pointed to recent trades for young defensemen as the likely price range: the deals that moved Noah Dobson, Mikhail Sergachev, Bowen Byram, and Simon Nemec. Those packages included several pieces, such as prospects and first-round picks.

Edvinsson, 23, is a restricted free agent coming off his three-year entry-level contract. PuckPedia lists no new deal, a qualifying offer of $874,125, and eligibility for an offer sheet. Detroit placed him on the injured non-roster list on Oct. 14 because of the contract dispute. If he does not sign by Dec. 1, he cannot play in the NHL this season.

The 2021 sixth overall pick had 9 goals and 25 points in 72 games last season and has 60 points in 175 career NHL games. LeBrun has said Edvinsson likely sees a trade as his most logical path, though he has not formally asked for one.

Two standoffs at once

The Edvinsson situation is running alongside Dylan Larkin’s trade request. The Detroit Free Press has reported that Larkin’s approved list now covers 10 teams, none of them Canadian. Detroit (3-3-3) continues its four-game Western road trip Thursday at Vancouver.
