Captain Dominik Shine scored three times, including an empty-net goal to finish his hat trick, and the Grand Rapids Griffins beat the Cleveland Monsters 5-2 on Saturday night at Van Andel Arena. Shine entered the night three goals shy of 100 in a Griffins uniform, so the hat trick took him to the milestone. Grand Rapids improved to 7-1-1-1, and Cleveland fell to 5-3-0-0.
How it happened
Shine opened the scoring in the first period. In the second, Shine struck again and Sheldon Dries added a goal in his 400th AHL game, while Luke Tuch scored shorthanded for Cleveland, leaving the Griffins up 3-1 after 40 minutes. Ondrej Becher made it 4-1 in the third before Tate Singleton answered for the Monsters, with assists from Max McCue and Boston Buckberger. Shine then sealed it with the empty-netter.
Dries scored for the second straight night after returning from his emergency stint with the Red Wings.
Goalies and special teams
Carter Gylander made 24 saves in his return to the Griffins’ net, a night after Trey Augustine faced 38 shots. Pheonix Copley stopped 26 for Cleveland. Grand Rapids outshot the Monsters 31-26, went 1-for-7 on the power play, and killed all six Cleveland power plays, a night after the Monsters had snapped the Griffins’ run of 28 straight kills.
What’s next
The game closed the Griffins’ four-game homestand. Cleveland returns home to host the Milwaukee Admirals on Friday, Oct. 30.
