The Buffalo Sabres have joined the Montreal Canadiens as teams interested in Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin, Chris Johnston of The Athletic reported Tuesday. The report is unconfirmed, and the Red Wings have not announced any trade or talks.

Johnston wrote that both clubs are “not currently on his trade list.” Larkin has a full no-trade clause through 2027-28 and has approved deals to 10 teams. Johnston added that the list could grow if that’s what it takes for Detroit to get the return it wants. A move to Buffalo would put Larkin with an Atlantic Division rival, as would a move to Montreal.

The price remains the sticking point. Sportsnet’s Eric Engels said on The Sick Podcast on Monday that Detroit’s asking price is high enough to thin out the field of buyers. Larkin, 30, is in the fourth year of an eight-year deal carrying an $8.7 million cap hit through 2030-31.

Detroit is still watching Montreal closely. Pierre LeBrun reported that assistant GM Kris Draper would scout the Canadiens again Tuesday night, his third look at their last four games. We covered Draper’s first trips last week.

The latest reports follow Elliotte Friedman’s comments Sunday that “the line has moved” on a possible Montreal deal (our report). Any trade to a team off the list would need Larkin’s approval. The Red Wings finished their western road trip with a 4-3 shootout win in Edmonton on Monday.

Correction (November 2, 2026): This story originally referred to Dylan Larkin as the Red Wings’ captain. Detroit removed him as captain on Sept. 11. It has been corrected.
