The Detroit Red Wings are calling up goaltender Michal Postava from the Grand Rapids Griffins, Griffins head coach Dan Watson told reporters after Wednesday night’s game against the Manitoba Moose at Van Andel Arena. Postava, a 24-year-old Czech goalie whom Detroit signed as an undrafted free agent in June 2025, will join the Red Wings on their four-game Western road trip. The Red Wings had not posted the transaction as of late Wednesday, and the move is expected to become official Thursday.
Neither team gave a reason for the recall. Daniil Tarasov started Tuesday’s 4-3 shootout loss in Seattle, and John Gibson last played in Saturday’s shootout win over San Jose. Octopus Thrower noted that it is unclear whether an injury is behind the move, and that Detroit was unlikely to lean on one goalie for all three games left on the trip.
Earlier Wednesday, the Griffins signed veteran goaltender Jamie Phillips to a professional tryout. Phillips, 33, has played 27 AHL games, all with Manitoba, and 99 in the ECHL. Rookie Trey Augustine, who earned his first pro win last weekend in Rockford, is in line for a larger share of the Grand Rapids net while Postava is away.
A fast start in Grand Rapids
Postava has been one of the AHL’s best goalies this fall. He entered Wednesday 4-0 with a 1.25 goals-against average and a .954 save percentage, and he led the league in wins. He was named AHL Player of the Week on Oct. 13.
He led HC Kometa Brno to the 2025 Czech Extraliga championship before signing a two-year, entry-level contract with Detroit that carries a $975,000 cap hit and runs through this season. As Sebastian Cossa’s backup in Grand Rapids last season, he went 17-6-0 with a .937 save percentage and a 1.71 goals-against average. The Red Wings recalled him under emergency conditions last spring when Cam Talbot was hurt.
What’s next
Detroit (3-3-3) continues its trip Thursday at Vancouver at 10 p.m. on Detroit SportsNet, then visits Calgary on Saturday and Edmonton on Monday. Coach Todd McLellan has not said whether Postava will get a start. The Griffins host the Cleveland Monsters on Friday at 7 p.m.
