How it happened
Seattle scored first for the sixth time in nine Detroit games, and the Red Wings managed only four shots in a second period that ended with them down 3-0. Montour’s goal came right after Catton won a faceoff against Andrew Copp.
The comeback started with Arvidsson’s fourth goal of the season, his first at even strength, after Finnie pulled defenders up ice on the rush. Less than a minute later, Raymond scored his first goal of the season on the power play, putting in his own rebound. Detroit pulled Daniil Tarasov for an extra attacker with just over two minutes left, Stephenson took a roughing penalty with 1:25 to go, and DeBrincat finished a passing play at the left post to force overtime.
DeBrincat reached 300 goals in his 705th NHL game. Among active American players, only Auston Matthews, Kyle Connor, and Jake Guentzel got there faster. DeBrincat and Raymond each finished with a goal and an assist, and Larkin had two assists.
Goalies and lineup
Tarasov made 24 saves. Philipp Grubauer stopped 22 shots for Seattle (6-3-1) and made the deciding save in the shootout. The Red Wings scored twice on the power play and allowed one power-play goal.
J.T. Compher, Marco Kasper, and Mason Appleton remained out with injuries, and Nate Danielson was a healthy scratch. Axel Sandin-Pellikka, whom the Red Wings planned to give a look on the trip, was in the lineup.
Coach Todd McLellan liked the response after a flat middle period. “We have a pretty resilient group,” he said afterward, adding that the team had been upset with how it played before the third.
