The Detroit Red Wings continue their four-game Western road trip Thursday night against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena, with puck drop at 10 p.m. on Detroit SportsNet. Detroit (3-3-3) has a point in five straight games, while Vancouver (2-8-1) has lost eight in a row.
Where things stand
The Red Wings come in off a 4-3 shootout loss in Seattle on Tuesday, when they erased a 3-0 third-period deficit. Alex DeBrincat tied that game with 17 seconds left for his 300th career goal and leads Detroit with 11 points in nine games. Lucas Raymond scored his first goal of the season in the comeback, and Viktor Arvidsson has four goals.
Vancouver lost 6-3 to Carolina on Tuesday at home after entering the third period tied, the fourth straight game in which the Canucks were level or ahead after two periods and still lost. Elias Pettersson leads the team with 11 points, and Paul Cotter has a team-high four goals. Forward Marco Rossi has missed two games with an illness but returned to practice Wednesday.
Goalies and lineup
Field Level Media projects John Gibson to start for Detroit after Daniil Tarasov played in Seattle. Gibson is 2-3-1 with a 3.58 goals-against average this season but has a 15-5-2 career record against Vancouver. Kevin Lankinen is expected in goal for the Canucks.
Goaltender Michal Postava is also headed to Vancouver. Griffins coach Dan Watson said Wednesday night that Postava, who leads the AHL with four wins and a .954 save percentage, is being called up to join the Red Wings on the trip. As of early Thursday, the Red Wings had not announced the recall or a corresponding roster move, and they have not said whether either of their NHL goalies is hurt. Postava has not played an NHL game.
J.T. Compher, Marco Kasper, and Mason Appleton remain on injured reserve, and Simon Edvinsson is still unsigned.
Storylines
This is the first of two meetings this season; the Canucks visit Little Caesars Arena on Nov. 25. Detroit won both games against Vancouver last season by a combined 9-1. The trip continues with stops in Calgary and Edmonton.
Dylan Larkin’s situation still hangs over the trip. Larkin has assisted on Detroit’s last two power-play goals while reports continue about his request to be traded.
