Scoring summary

  • 3rd, about 9:00 — UNH: Émile Guité, power play (Nick Ring, Ryan Johnson). 1-0 New Hampshire.

How it happened

New Hampshire controlled the play for long stretches, outshooting Michigan State 34-14 and winning 40 of 70 faceoffs. Ravensbergen, the Big Ten’s Third Star of the Week after last weekend’s win at RIT, kept the game scoreless for more than two periods before Guité, a freshman, finished a power-play chance about nine minutes into the third. Ring, a senior, picked up an assist to stretch his point streak to five games.

The Spartans’ best chance to tie came late, but UNH goalie Michael Simpson made a glove save with 2:04 left in regulation. Simpson finished with 14 saves for his second straight shutout. Michigan State, which entered the night with Anthony Romani, Chase Reid, Eric Nilson, and Ryker Lee all among the nation’s top point producers per game, was held to 14 shots and went 0-for-1 on the power play. UNH went 1-for-3 with the extra man.

New Hampshire also beat a No. 2-ranked Michigan State team at home in October last season, 4-3, and now leads the all-time series 9-8-0.
