How it happened

Detroit chased the game open inside the first nine minutes, scoring three times on Lankinen. Raymond tipped Johansson’s shot from the point for the opener, Wallinder banked a puck off the Vancouver goalie from below the goal line less than two minutes later, and after Pettersson answered on a one-timer from the right dot, Raymond backhanded a loose puck into an open net on the power play. “We came out really hot,” Raymond said afterward.

From there the Red Wings smothered the Canucks, who went nearly two full periods without a shot on goal. Rasmussen scored his first goal of the season late in the second, and Finnie finished a drop pass from Arvidsson early in the third. Arvidsson and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard each had two assists. Vancouver committed 17 giveaways to Detroit’s six.

Goalies

Gibson stopped four of the five shots he faced before leaving after two periods. The team listed it as an upper-body injury, and coach Todd McLellan said afterward that the problem was with Gibson’s eye and was not believed to be serious. Postava, 24, made seven saves on eight shots in his first NHL action, allowing only Lekkerimaki’s goal. Detroit called him up because backup Daniil Tarasov was hurt in practice Wednesday; McLellan described Tarasov as day-to-day. Lankinen made 26 saves for Vancouver.

Center J.T. Compher returned to the lineup after missing seven games with an undisclosed injury.
