The U.S. National Under-18 Team fell 5-1 to Long Island University on Friday night at Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow, N.Y., as the NTDP resumed its slate of games against NCAA Division I opponents.
LIU scored three times in the first period. Jaden Dyke opened the scoring from the right dot at 9:01, Luc Bydal one-timed a shot from the right circle with 1:55 left, and Sixten Jennersjo added a third 81 seconds later. The U18s had chances before the Sharks broke through: Brayden Willis and Braden Horton both threatened in the opening 10 minutes, and LIU goalie Daniel Duris turned aside Horton on a shorthanded 2-on-1.
Gerry DiCunzolo got the NTDP on the board midway through the second period, tapping in a backdoor feed from Nash Roed along the near-side boards. It was the fifth goal of the season for DiCunzolo, a Buffalo native and Penn State commit, and his third in three games.
LIU pulled away in the third. Bo Cosman deflected a shot in at 2:10, and Trent Powell scored on the power play from the right circle with 15:03 to play. Nolan Fitzhenry nearly answered on a third-period breakaway, but his shot slid just wide.
Nate Chizik made 30 saves in goal for the NTDP, while Duris stopped 16 shots for LIU.
The game came a week after the U18s won both ends of a USHL weekend set against Dubuque at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, 6-4 and 7-5.
What’s next
The U18s finish their New York trip Saturday at Army West Point, with a 7 p.m. puck drop at Tate Rink. The U17 team is off this weekend.
