The Detroit Red Wings have been underwhelmed by the offers for Dylan Larkin and Simon Edvinsson and have started asking other teams about young centers, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said on Thursday’s episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast. The report is unconfirmed. The Red Wings have not announced any trade and have not commented on their asking price for either player.

Friedman said a couple of teams told him Detroit is “starting to ask about young centres,” and that the target could include top center prospects who have not yet reached the NHL. He said the same approach would apply to Edvinsson if the Red Wings decide to move the unsigned defenseman. According to the podcast, Edvinsson’s preference is still to be traded, neither side has moved on contract terms, and Detroit has been somewhat surprised it hasn’t found a deal it likes.

Friedman also said Larkin has been trying to make a trade possible. Larkin’s list of approved destinations has grown to 10 teams. Mitten Hockey reported Friday that NHL insider Frank Seravalli said talks with Minnesota had stalled over the value of Danila Yurov, the Wild’s 2022 first-round pick, and The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta has since named Ryan Hartman and Bobby Brink as other possible pieces in a Minnesota package.

Edvinsson’s clock

Edvinsson, 23, is a restricted free agent and must sign by 5 p.m. Eastern on Dec. 1 to be eligible to play in the NHL this season. Friedman noted that leaves roughly 40 days for a resolution and said some groundwork toward a possible trade is being done. Friedman first reported Oct. 7 that Edvinsson would prefer a trade.

The latest report runs counter to the public stance of interim general manager Shawn Horcoff, who has said signing Edvinsson is a priority and that Detroit has no interest in trading him. Earlier this week, The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun reported that Edvinsson and his agent met with Horcoff in person.

The Red Wings, who are 4-3-3 and riding a six-game point streak, continue their road trip Saturday in Calgary and Monday in Edmonton.

Correction (October 26, 2026): This story originally referred to Dylan Larkin as the Red Wings’ captain and to Frank Seravalli as a Sportsnet reporter. Detroit began the 2026-27 season without a captain, and Seravalli is not with Sportsnet. It has been corrected.
