The Calgary Flames beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Saturday night at Scotiabank Saddledome, ending Detroit’s six-game point streak (3-0-3) in the Red Wings’ last regular-season visit to the arena. Calgary scored three times in the second period, two of them on the power play, and won its third straight game.

Detroit fell to 4-4-3 and 1-1-1 on its four-game Western road trip. The loss also snapped the Red Wings’ eight-game winning streak against Calgary, which dated to Feb. 9, 2023. The Flames improved to 4-6-0 after opening the season with five straight losses.

How it happened

Joel Farabee opened the scoring at 17:50 of the first period, finishing a cross-ice pass from Adam Klapka with Kevin Bahl also assisting.

Andrew Copp tied it 2:22 into the second, poking a loose puck past Devin Cooley at the top of the crease after J.T. Compher’s shot. It was Copp’s second goal of the season and his first since Oct. 15. Compher picked up the assist in his second game back from injury.

The tie lasted about six minutes. Zayne Parekh, a former Saginaw Spirit defenseman, put Calgary back in front on the power play at 8:38 with a wrist shot from the point, his first goal of the season. Ryan Strome made it 3-1 at 17:04 off a feed from Morgan Frost, and Matvei Gridin scored on another power play at 18:30, during a delay-of-game penalty to Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, for a 4-1 lead. Neither team scored in the third period.

Farabee finished with a goal and two assists, giving him six points during a four-game point streak. Gridin had a goal and an assist, and Matt Coronato added two assists.

In goal and on special teams

Gibson made 21 saves on 25 shots. He started two nights after leaving Thursday’s 5-2 win in Vancouver with an upper-body injury, a game in which Michal Postava made his NHL debut in relief. Cooley stopped 28 of 29 shots for Calgary in his third straight start.

Calgary went 2-for-2 on the power play, and Detroit went 0-for-2. The Red Wings have allowed 13 power-play goals this season, second-most in the NHL. Alex DeBrincat had a partial breakaway turned aside by Cooley.

Coach Todd McLellan said the Flames were better in several areas, pointing first to special teams. “I thought it was one of our poorer nights as far as execution goes,” he said. Rookie Emmitt Finnie agreed that Calgary was the better team on the night.

What’s next

The Red Wings close the road trip Monday at Edmonton (9:30 p.m. ET), then return to Little Caesars Arena to host Chicago on Thursday and St. Louis in a Halloween afternoon game on Saturday.
