No. 6 Wisconsin scored once in each of the first and third periods and twice in the second to blank No. 5 Western Michigan 4-0 in an exhibition on Saturday night at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo. The game does not count in either team’s record, so the Broncos remain 4-1-0 heading into next week’s nonconference series against Long Island University. It was Wisconsin’s first trip to Kalamazoo since 1981.

How it happened

Chase Jette opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal in the first period, finishing a pass from Finn Brink off the far post. Grady Deering worked around a Broncos defenseman to make it 2-0 in the second, and Brent Solomon scored from the slot later in the period. Zach Wooten finished a centering feed from JJ Wiebusch in the third.

Western Michigan matched Wisconsin nearly shot for shot, finishing with 33 to the Badgers’ 34, but could not beat the nation’s stingiest defense. Gavin Moffatt made 30 saves for the Broncos. Neither team scored on the power play; Wisconsin’s only special-teams goal came shorthanded. Wisconsin won 32 of 56 faceoffs.

The weekend was an unusual one for the Broncos, who lost 3-2 at No. 1 Michigan on a goal with 0.1 seconds left on Friday before returning home for the exhibition.

What’s next

Western Michigan hosts Long Island University at Lawson Arena on Thursday, Oct. 29, and Friday, Oct. 30, both at 7 p.m., before a trip to North Dakota on Nov. 6-7.
